WC’s Ternera advances at NJCAA national tournament
Coyotes look to keep up the momentum at nationals
Weatherford College closed Day 3 in ninth place overall at the NJCAA Division I Women's Tennis National Championship held in Sumter, South Carolina.
The Coyotes, ranked No. 10 in the country, stayed competitive across singles and doubles consolation draws, highlighted by a strong performance from Maria Camila Ternera, who posted a convincing 8–3 victory over Emma Guzman of Pratt Community College (Kansas) in the Flight 1 singles consolation semifinals.
WC's Juliana Jurado battled in Flight 3 singles but fell 8–5 to Stefani Georgieva of St. Petersburg College (Florida). In doubles, Jurado teamed with Rosmary Pena in Flight 3 consolation play, where the WC duo was eliminated by Pratt's Barbara Mattar and Alyse Zimmerman, 8–2.
Additional doubles action saw Ternera and Kshirin Wakalkar compete in the Flight 1 consolation semifinals, dropping an 8–3 decision to Pawarada Thaimuanphol and Pawarapa Thaimuangphol of USC Sumter, while Valeria Cabrera and Sara Tublen came up short 8–5 against Emma Guzman and Ebonie Russell from Pratt in Flight 2 consolation play.
Ternera was scheduled to play for the Flight 1 singles consolation championship Tuesday morning, and Jurado and Pena were to compete for the consolation title in Flight 3 doubles Tuesday afternoon.
