Coyote softball takes all four from Vernon
No. 23 Coyotes complete four‑game series sweep behind dominant pitching, power at the plate, and error‑free defense.
The Weatherford College softball team closed out a four-game series sweep of Vernon College on Saturday at Stuart Field, securing victories of 11–1 and 5–0 behind timely offense, dominant pitching and flawless defense.
Weatherford, ranked No. 23 in the country, wasted little time asserting control in the opener, striking in the first inning when Joni Jackson launched a two-run home run to left field. The Coyotes created separation in the second, sending nine to the plate and scoring five runs. Alex Graham doubled in two runs, Rian Coon followed with a two-run single, and an additional run crossed on a Vernon error.
The Coyotes continued to apply pressure in the fourth inning, adding four more runs on four hits. Karlie Landrum delivered a two-run home run, while Aundrea Thompson and Janae Trojacek each contributed RBI hits as Weatherford pulled away for the run-rule win.
In the circle, Sarah Hanf delivered a steady performance, allowing one run on four hits over five innings. The sophomore struck out seven and walked two as Weatherford backed her with clean defensive play and aggressive baserunning.
Weatherford finished the game with 11 hits, including multiple-hit outings from Coon, Landrum and Graham. Jackson, Coon, Landrum and Graham each drove in two runs, and the Coyotes went error-free while swiping three bases.
The second game showcased another complete performance, this time fueled by a dominant outing from Kamryn Mears. The right-hander threw a complete-game shutout, scattering two hits and keeping Vernon off the scoreboard throughout the contest.
Offensively, Weatherford broke through in the third inning when Jackson connected on her second home run of the day, a two-run shot to center field. One batter later, the Coyotes added another run to extend the lead to three.
Weatherford finished with five runs on the night, getting contributions throughout the lineup. Aundrea Thompson and Karlie Landrum each recorded two hits, and the Coyotes remained patient at the plate, drawing four walks. Defensively, Weatherford once again played error-free softball, with Landrum leading the effort at first base.
WC improved to 30-10 overall and 14-6 in conference play.
The Coyotes travel to North Central Texas College in Gainesville on Wednesday and return home Saturday, April 25, to face NCTC again at Stuart Field. The doubleheader begins at noon.
