Weatherford College powered its way to two wins at Vernon College behind seven home runs in a rain-disrupted softball doubleheader Wednesday and Thursday.
The No. 23 Coyotes won both games by identical 8-2 scores, with WC's lineup delivering a steady barrage of long balls across the 14 innings.
WC has won three straight and 12 of its last 14 games. The Coyotes are 28-10 overall and 12-6 in conference play.
In Wednesday's opener, Weatherford launched four home runs to seize control early and pull away late. Joni Jackson opened the scoring with a solo shot in the first inning, and the Coyotes added two more long balls in the third as Jackie Divine and Alex Graham went deep.
Divine finished 3-for-5 with a triple, a home run and two RBI, while Graham went 3-for-4 with a double, a homer and three RBI. Adeline Glatch capped the power display with a two-run homer later in the game as Weatherford scored in five different innings.
Sarah Hanf pitched all seven innings for the Coyotes, allowing two runs on five hits while striking out nine to improve to 11-4. Vernon scored single runs in the second and fifth innings but was otherwise kept in check.
Game 2, suspended by rain on Wednesday and resumed on Thursday, featured three more home runs by Weatherford as the Coyotes again built an early cushion.
Jackson struck again in the first inning with a two-run homer, and Graham followed with a three-run shot during a four-run third inning that pushed the lead to 6-0. Karlie Landrum added to the home run total with a solo blast later in the game, giving the Coyotes three homers in the nightcap.
Graham went 2-for-4 with three RBI, Landrum finished 1-for-2 with a home run and two runs scored, and Jackie Divine collected two hits while swiping two bases.
Weatherford added single runs in the sixth and seventh innings before Vernon scored twice in the seventh to avoid the shutout.
Kamryn Mears earned the win in Game 2, also improving to 11-4, by tossing a complete game. She allowed two runs on four hits, struck out seven and walked one.
The Coyotes and Chaparrals will resume the series in Weatherford on Saturday, April 18. The doubleheader begins at noon at Stuart Field.
