No. 21 Weatherford College split a softball doubleheader on Friday with No. 5 McLennan Community College in Waco.
The Coyotes dropped the opener 11-4 after a late McLennan surge, then bounced back behind a complete-game pitching performance from Kamryn Mears to claim a 3-1 win in game two.
WC's record moved to 26-10 overall and 10-6 in conference play, while McLennan, which suffered only its third home loss of the season, went to 27-7 and 11-1.
In the opener, Weatherford built an early lead before McLennan broke it open with a nine-run sixth inning. Jackie Divine paced the Coyotes offensively, going 3 for 4 with an RBI and a double. Alex Graham added two hits and drove in a pair of runs, while Karlie Landrum also chipped in an RBI.
The Coyotes scored three runs in the second inning and took advantage of early opportunities, finishing with nine hits overall. Aofia Noa and Adeline Glatch each scored runs, but the Coyotes were unable to contain McLennan's lineup late. Brooke Fechner delivered the decisive blow with a three-run home run during the big sixth inning for the Highlanders.
The second game belonged to Weatherford, which answered McLennan's first-inning run with a three-run second and relied on Mears the rest of the way. Adeline Glatch provided the key swing, launching a two-run home run to put the Coyotes ahead for good. Mabri Warren added an RBI double as part of Weatherford's three-run frame.
Mears went the distance, allowing six hits and one run while striking out three to improve to 10-4 on the season. She worked out of multiple jams, stranding McLennan runners in each of the final three innings.
Rian Coon led Weatherford at the plate with two hits, including a double, while Joni Jackson and Divine also recorded hits.
After a week off, the Coyotes will next face Vernon College in a four-game conference series. WC will travel to Vernon on Wednesday, April 15, and then host the Chaparrals on Saturday, April 18, in a noon doubleheader at Stuart Field.
