WC men named reserve national champs at rodeo finals
The Coyotes went out west to Casper, Wyoming and did what they do best. They showed the nation that WC never gives up.
The Weatherford College men's rodeo team finished as runners up at the College National Finals Rodeo, earning the title of reserve national champions and the highest finish ever for a WC men's team. The event wrapped up with the final round Saturday night at the Ford Wyoming Center in Casper.
"We had one of the most balanced teams we've ever had up there, with success at both ends of the arena," said WC head coach Johnny Emmons. "It was pretty cool that all three of the Lone Star Region's team roping and barrel racing spots were represented by WC students, even better that all three sets of team ropers made it to the final round."
WC had two of the top four team roping duos in the final standings, with Beldon Cox and Jett Stewart finishing as reserve champions and Jeryn Ellerd and Hunter Helton coming in fourth overall. Brock Borkman and Denton Parish were tenth.
Mecate Trammell also earned points for the WC men, finishing fourth overall in bull riding, while Mitchie Story bounced back after a no score first go-round, to claim the second go-round reserve championship. He finished 16th overall.
The WC women finished fifth overall as a team, anchored by a series of standout rounds in the arena.
Acey Pinkston placed 12th overall in barrel racing after earning the first go-round championship and finishing as the second go-round reserve champion.
Despite some tough luck in the opening round, Jacee Graff captured the second go-round championship before placing fourth in the third go-round.
Rounding out the scoring for the WC women, Emily Ward finished in 23rd, delivering three beautiful barrel runs and recorded a sixth-place finish in the third go-round for breakaway roping. Kacey Bass overcame early setbacks to put together two impressive barrel runs of her own.
