Men’s golf crowned conference and region Champions
Historic performance at Region V tournament earns Coyotes first region championship
For the first time in program history, the newly ranked No. 3 Weatherford College men's golf team has won the NJCAA Region V Championship title, and for the second consecutive year, has won the conference championship.
On the green of Legends Golf Course in Kingsland, Texas, the Coyotes defeated several nationally ranked competitors, beating out No. 2 Odessa College, and the previously ranked No. 3 McLennan Community College.
Collectively, WC shot three over in the first round but rallied for a four under performance in the second. It was in the third round where the Coyotes stood above the rest.
"We played the best in the nation this week at a challenging venue," said head coach Dave Rennhack.
"We were four shots behind the lead entering the final round and delivered a clutch performance, carding an 11 under team score."
No. 6 Michael Mayer placed second in the individuals, shooting one shot less than first place. His five-under in the third round was the best in the tournament.
"We had stand out performances from the entire team," continued Rennhack.
WC played in the final group against Odessa and Midland, who placed first and second at last year's national championship.
"This is a historic win for our program," exclaimed Rennhack. "I'm proud of the way this team has bonded throughout the season."
The men's team look to continue their momentum at the NJCAA Division 1 District Championship, held at Mission Del Lago Golf Course in San Antonio on April 27-28.
