WC golf off to strong start following fall
Possibilities are limitless for WC golf come springtime
The national champions aren't crowned until the spring, but based on their performances in the fall portion of the 2025-26 season, Weatherford College looks to be in the mix come that time.
The WC men's team finished their fall season ranked No. 7 in the nation by Scoreboard and No. 6 in the Bushnell/Golf Week Coaches Poll. The WC women are ranked eighth in the nation.
Individually, the program has three players who are ranked in the top 25 nationally, led by freshman Michael Mayer from Germany at No. 10.
"The courses and tournaments we played in throughout the fall prepared us well for the upcoming spring semester," head coach Dave Rennhack said. "I'm looking forward to seeing us make a run for a top finish at the national championship."
Capping their fall, the Coyotes placed second at the NJCAA Division I National Championship Preview. The tournament was held on the same course as the upcoming 2026 NJCAA National Championship, Sand Creek Station Golf Course in Newton, Kansas. WC sophomore Dawson Langan (United Kingdom) finished in fourth place individually.
"Sand Creek Station is by far the toughest course we play during the season and tough conditions are a part of the landscape in Kansas golf," Rennhack said. "I'm really proud of the way this group has supported each other this semester. We have a team full of talent that has the capability of finishing at the top of the National Championship this coming May."
Other fall highlights for the men's team include:
*Fourth at the HRNCIAR Invitational hosted by Cameron University in Oklahoma. Mayer was third individually, with freshmen Abdo Fakori eighth and Youssef El Hali ninth, both from Morocco.
*Fourth in Ruidoso, New Mexico, Mayer seventh individually, including a round of 63 out of the three he played.
*Third in Waco, Mayer second individually, freshman Nicholas Lewis (South Africa) 10th.
Fall highlights for the women's team include:
*First in Waco, sophomore Emily Gutierrez (San Antonio) fourth individually, freshman Yixuan Mu (China) seventh and sophomore Corrina Haros (Mansfield) eighth.
*Third in Ruidoso, New Mexico, Haros seventh individually.
*Seventh in Hot Springs, Arkansas, freshman Tasnim Smaili (Morocco) 14th individually.
Rennhack said this season's recruiting class is extremely strong and making choosing a travel team a challenge in itself.
"We have several great players on our team that have only competed individually at events. These players would have been in our team mix last season," he said. "Having a deep roster full of talented players has set up a great environment for intra-squad competitions.
"Our women's team continues to move up in the rankings and I'm excited about the possibilities this spring. All of our incoming freshman players made our traveling squad and contributed greatly to our success this fall."
