In their first season in more than 20 years, the Weatherford College golf team has qualified for the NJCAA Division I National Tournament.
The Coyotes did it in dramatic fashion, winning a sudden death playoff over Western Texas College at The Hideout Golf Club in Brownwood on Tuesday. The two teams finished five rounds of qualifying play in a tie for the fourth and final nationals' berth. WC won on the second playoff hole.
"These guys are looking like D-1 players," said first-year WC golf coach Jesse Speirs. "They're getting better and better, and we're excited to represent Weatherford College at the national tournament."
The first three rounds of qualifying play were at Squaw Creek Golf Club in Willow Park two weeks prior. The second half of qualification picked up Monday in Brownwood, with rain shortening the scheduled three rounds to two rounds. WC moved from sixth place to fourth place after shooting 12-under-par as a team over the 36 holes.
Logan Moore led the Coyotes, finishing in a tie for seventh place with rounds of 73 and 66, five under par. Bryce McCracken tied for 16th and Chris Choi tied for 21st among 56 golfers.
"This semester, everyone is buying in to how we practice and prepare for collegiate tournaments," Speirs said. "They've advanced quicker than I thought. Guys are starting to shoot in the 60s and everyone's on the same page."
Coyote golf last qualified for the national tournament in 1997 under Coach Rod Embry.
Odessa College will host the 2022 national tournament May 10-13 at the Odessa Country Club.
