For their final home game of the season, the Weatherford College men's basketball team won 80-79 against Grayson College in a last-second battle Wednesday at the Graber Athletic Center.
The Coyotes and the Vikings were neck and neck like racehorses in the first half, showing no signs of stopping, with Grayson leading 38-36 at the break.
As the second half began, it looked like GC was going to walk away with a win, however, the tide changed when WC sophomore forward Tyson Whybrew got a clutch "and 1" that helped bridge the gap.
Freshman guard Adrian Shackleton hit a three-pointer that made that gap disappear. The Coyotes were back in action.
As the clock ticked down with a couple of minutes left, Grayson made a strong effort to regain the lead, but Weatherford held them off. The buzzer beater from Grayson's scoring leader, Terrance Ramirez (31 points), made the final score 80-79.
Adrian Shackleton led the Coyotes in points with 21, followed by Tyson Whybrew with 16 and Antwan Wilson with 15.
The Coyotes have won four games in a row, making their record 10-3 in conference play, 17-11 overall and 12-4 at home. They remain second in the conference standings under McLennan Community College.
The Lady Coyotes had a tough loss against the Lady Vikings from Grayson College, falling short 59-53.
Despite holding the lead at the half, 29-27, GC was able to come back in the third and fourth quarters to claim victory over WC.
Mya Wesley was the Weatherford points leader with 15, right next to Neso Anisiobi with 14 and Pearson McVay at 10 points.
The Lady Coyotes are 17-10 overall this season, with an 8-6 record in conference play.
The women's team travels to Cisco College on Saturday, March 1.
Both teams will be at Ranger College on Wednesday, March 5, with tip-off for the women's team at 5 p.m. and the men's at 7 p.m.
