Coyotes named co-champions, to host postseason series this week
Three-peat for Coyotes bring postseason to Weatherford College
The Weatherford College Coyotes are co-champions of the Northern Texas Junior College Athletic Conference after splitting a baseball doubleheader with Vernon College at Roger Williams Ballpark Saturday.
This is the third straight conference title for the program.
WC will be the top seed from the NTJCAC and will host El Paso Community College in a postseason first-round best of three series. The series will be Thursday, Friday, and if necessary, Saturday, May 8-10 at Williams Ballpark. All games will begin at 1 p.m.
In game one Saturday, Weatherford's Trent Collier threw a perfect game, allowing no hits, no runs and no walks while striking out six. The game ended after the fifth inning due to the run rule in a 10-0 WC win.
Mason Ashlock hit a grand slam as the Coyotes scored six runs in the bottom of the first inning. Cayden Byrd also hit a home run, a three-run walk-off shot in the bottom of the fifth.
Vernon jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the second inning of game two and kept the Coyotes' bats at bay. WC's Caden Mitchell went 2-for-4 with one RBI. Vernon won the game 4-1.
The No. 5 Coyotes ended the regular season 44-11 overall and 24-8 in conference play. The 44 wins is the second most in the 23-year history of the program.
