Coyote baseball wins two in conference opener
Home runs power Coyotes to victory in Game 1, late rally secures game 2 win
The Weatherford College baseball team is ranked No. 1 in the nation, based on a 15-2 non-conference record against a very tough slate of opponents. But the games that really matter began on Wednesday, with the start of conference play at North Central Texas College.
WC took both games of the doubleheader in Gainesville, 13-3 and 6-5.
The Coyotes hit five home runs in game one, powering for nine combined runs in the fourth and fifth innings.
Aledo native Trace Mazon was 3-for-4 with three RBI and a home run. Jake Overstreet scored three runs on a 2-for-2 performance with a homer as well.
Evan Brandt, the nation's wins leader, picked up victory number six in as many appearances with one earned run and five strikeouts in five innings—a complete game that ended early due to the run-rule.
In game two, NCTC had a 5-4 lead in the top of the seventh when WC responded with two more runs.
Caden Mitchell was 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBI. Trey Butler added two hits and two walks.
Trent Collier earned the win with only two hits in four and one-third, striking out seven with no runs allowed.
The Coyotes will face NCTC again at Roger Williams Ballpark on Saturday in a noon doubleheader.
