Weatherford College cagers in mix at conference mid-point
WEATHERFORD – While Saturday's wins over Temple College by the Weatherford College men and women provided Nos. 759 and 800 in the record book for WC head coach Bob McKinley, they also provided a boost for the Coyotes squads as they head into the last half of North Texas Junior College Athletic Conference (NTJCAC) play.
The Weatherford men quashed the usually high-scoring Panthers on Saturday, 80-57. The win evened the Coyotes conference record at 3-3, and provided back-to-back wins for the first time this season in the NTJCAC slate.
WC currently shares third place with Collin and Temple, two games behind standings leaders McLennan and Ranger, both at 5-1.
But extending their current home stand on Wednesday, the Coyotes have a chance to move up the ladder, as they face Waco-based McLennan, who beat WC in the first round, but have not been as proficient on the road this season.
WC has held service at home thus far and catch the conference leaders at Graber Athletic Center for the return matches.
After consecutive losses early in the conference schedule, the WC women have reeled off three straight wins, and in convincing fashion, beating opponents by an average margin of 27 points.
Taking care of business against McLennan and Southwestern could set up a showdown match for the Lady Coyotes against Hill, who handed Weatherford its first conference loss.
Both WC teams look to make good on the last game of the home stand on Wednesday, as the NTJCAC members jockey for the top four spots and a reservation to the NJCAA Region V tournament in March.
The Lady Coyotes tip off at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, with the WC men slated for a 7:30 p.m. start.
