WC schedules Softball, Baseball camps

The seasons may be over, but the hunt for future talent is ongoing.

With that in mind, the Weatherford College softball and baseball teams hold summer tryouts and camps.

The Coyotes baseball team recently held an evaluation camp for potential new players. Meanwhile, the Coyote softball team has a Senior Showcase Camp scheduled for June 13, followed by Senior Open Tryouts on June 20, both at Stuart Field.

“We are looking for possible walk-on players for next year, as well as potential scholarship players for the 2019 and 2020 class,” Coyotes softball coach Haylee Williams said.

Williams said the camps are held for more reasons than to see how players are in the field.

“We look for kids who compete, hustle, high motor and are athletic,” she said. “We also pay attention to how they speak to others at camp, how they receive instruction, and interact with other players and coaches.”

Several scholarship players have been found in these camps, Williams said. In fact, Katy Simon, who recently wrapped up her sophomore season as one of the top pitchers in the North Texas Junior College Athletic Conference, was recruited at a showcase camp.

“That worked out well for us,” Williams said, smiling.

Williams said it’s a “no-brainer” for players to attend the evaluation camps. They get to display their skills in front of many college coaches.

“For us it’s a great way to see a lot of players in one location,” she said. “We get to see them do every skill and get multiple reps at it.”
