Ten members of the Weatherford College rodeo team, including four freshmen, qualified for 11 spots in the Eastern New Mexico University Rodeo in Portales this past Saturday. It was the first rodeo of the season for the Southwest Region of the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association (NIRA).

Sara Angelone qualified for the finals in two events and finished as the reserve women’s all-around champion by winning second in the first round of breakaway roping and finishing seventh. She also teamed up with Ranger College’s Marissa Boisjoli for a 10th place finish in team roping.

Freshman bull rider Hadley Miller landed a third place finish. Freshman barrel racers Kaitlyn Woodman and Brooklyn Gunter both won points with Woodman placing in the finals and sixth place overall, and Gunter placed sixth in the opening round and finished seventh overall. Emily McDeavitt tied for second in the opening round of goat tying but finished 7th overall.

College National Finals Rodeo qualifiers Lane Cooper, Blake Bentley and Kade Smith all got on the board in team roping. Cooper and Bentley teamed up to place ninth in first round, fourth in the finals and fourth overall. Smith teamed up with former CNFR WC student Kirby Blankenship (Sul Ross) to place fourth in the opening round but ended up eighth overall.
