WC rodeo places three in CNFR top 10

Capping off one of the most successful seasons in school history, Weatherford College rodeo team members brought home three top 10 finishes from the College National Finals Rodeo (CNFR) in Casper, Wyoming.

Bareback rider Leighton Berry finished fifth in the nation after turning in a 74.5 in the finals Saturday night. The Weatherford native scored a 301 total over four rounds in his first CNFR.

“Leighton rode as well as he could have all week, he was outstanding,” said Johnny Emmons, WC head rodeo coach. “He just didn’t have strong bucking horses to really showcase his talent and rack up the points. He’s a superstar and all rodeo fans will hear a lot more about in his future!”

Bristan Kennedy finished strong in barrel racing, placing third in the final round for the fourth fastest run of the entire week. The sophomore from Levelland finished sixth in the nation overall.

Freshman Kasen Brennise, who also qualified for the finals, finished seventh in tie down roping despite a bad draw Saturday.

Chantz Webster was 14th in tie down roping, Blake Bentley and Kade Smith finished 19th in team roping, and Lane Cooper finished 33rd in team roping with Casey McCleskey of Clarendon College.

“We had the most qualifiers we’ve ever had and the most short-go qualifiers we’ve ever had,” Emmons said. “All of our guys and girls are very competitive . . . I’m sure they would say they should have done better. We didn’t win as much as we wanted, but they knew WC was there! I’m very proud of the entire team.”
