Weatherford native fourth at rodeo nationals after first round

Leighton Berry helped Weatherford College start the College National Finals Rodeo off with a bang Sunday night.

Berry is a Weatherford native, but did not attend Weatherford High School. He finished the first round of bareback riding tied for fourth place out of 29 competitors in the first night of competition in Casper, Wyoming. His 77.5 was just four points behind the leader from Sheridan College in Wyoming.

Berry was the 2018-19 Southwest Region reserve champion (runner-up) despite an injury that kept him out of the first three rodeos of the season.

WC’s six other CNFR qualifiers were scheduled to begin their events Monday morning: Blake Bentley (team roping), Kasen Brennise (tie down roping), Lane Cooper (team roping), Bristan Kennedy (barrel racing), Kade Smith (team roping) and Chantz Webster (tie down roping).
