WC rodeo athletes qualify for nationals

With one rodeo remaining in the regular season, multiple Weatherford College athletes punched their tickets to the College National Finals Rodeo with their performances at the Howard College Rodeo in Big Spring last weekend.

Bristan Kennedy placed in both rounds and finished third in barrel racing to clinch the Southwest Region barrel racing title.

Kasen Brennise won the tiedown roping for the third time this season propelling him to the number one spot in the regional standings, and he can finish no worse than third for the season clinching his CNFR qualification as well.

Leighton Berry placed in both rounds and won fourth in bareback riding assuring no worse than second for the season and his first appearance in Casper, Wyoming for the national finals.

With Berry, Brennise and Kennedy headed to Casper, and the possibility of several other WC athletes qualifying, this will be WC’s 15th year to send students to the CNFR.

The WC men’s team took first place overall in Big Spring. The Coyotes dominated the tie down roping event winning first, second, third and seventh. Chantz Webster won the opening round and finished third overall moving him up to third in the standings. Tate Thomas tied for third with teammate Coy Arnold in the first round and finished second overall. Arnold finished seventh behind Brennise who won the finals and overall title.

In team roping, Lane Cooper and Kirby Blankenship won fourth overall.

Scott Martel placed in the first round and won eighth in steer wrestling.

Sara Angelone placed seventh in breakaway roping while Brikayli Kenney placed in both rounds winning fifth in barrel racing.

WC rodeo wraps up their regular season April 25-27 in Stephenville at the Tarleton State University Rodeo.
