WC rodeo starts season strong

Weatherford College was represented at the College Daze Rodeo in Portales, New Mexico, by 50 rodeo team members this past weekend for their first competition of the season.

Kelly Valdez led the women’s team to a 2nd place finish. Valdez, who won the women’s All-Around title, won both rounds of the barrel racing competition en route to that championship, and came from 7th place to win 2nd in the finals and finish 3rd overall in breakaway roping.

Sloan Anderson placed in both rounds and finished 5th in barrel racing, while Laney Fowler finished in 8th place in barrels.

The men’s team finished 7th with 225 points, but were only 120 points behind Clarendon who won the men’s title with 345 points.

Garrett Sommer led the way in team roping with partner Tee McLeod (New Mexico Junior College) roping two steers in 11.0 for the win. Kade Smith and Blake Bentley won 2nd with 12.5 on two steers, and Cooper Hatley roping with West Texas A&M’s Haden Cape picked up 8th place in team roping.

Scott Martell won the final round in steer wrestling with a run of 3.9 and finished 2nd overall with 9.2 on two head. Trent Nugent won the opening round and finished 3rd in bull riding, while Leigthon Berry placed in both rounds to win 5th in bareback riding.

WC Rodeo is off to the Sul Ross State University Rodeo this coming weekend, Sept. 27-29, in Alpine.
