Women’s rodeo team continues streak with another 2nd place finish

Nine members of the Weatherford College rodeo team qualified for the final round in 11 events at the Sul Ross State University Rodeo in Alpine this past weekend.

Kelly Valdez led the women’s team to a 2nd place finish for the second week in a row. Valdez won the barrel racing title for the second time this year by placing 3rd in the opening round and 1st in the final round en route to the Sul Ross championship.

Freshman Laney Fowler placed in both rounds and won 2nd in barrel racing over-all, while Bristan Kennedy placed in the final and finished up 4th in barrels. Haley Bowen finished 8th in breakaway roping.

On the men’s team, freshman Tate Thomas led the way winning the opening round in steer wrestling and finished 2nd in the finals and as the reserve champion. Thomas also finished 8th in tiedown roping.

Leighton Berry placed in two events as well, placing in both rounds and winning the reserve title in bareback riding and, along with Chantz Webster, placed in the finals and finished 6th in team roping.

Kade Smith and Blake Bently placed for the second time in a row in team roping. The duo won 2nd in the opening round and finished 7th for the weekend.

WC Rodeo will travel to Vernon this coming weekend for the Vernon College Rodeo at the Wilbarger County Events Center.
