VERNON, Texas – It was a great weekend for Weatherford College rodeo, as five athletes won their event championships and the men won the team championship at Vernon College Oct. 9-11.

The WC men’s team owned a 200-point lead over their nearest competitors.

Paradise native George Roland won the calf roping championship, winning both the first and second go-rounds. Roland tied both calves in a total time of 18.5 seconds. Clif Cooper (Decatur, TX), last year’s regional champion, took the reserve championship.  Roland leads the Southwest Region standings, with Cooper holding second.

WC also won the team roping championship with the team of Cameron Finney (Blue Ridge, TX) and Brandon Garson (Burleson, TX). The pair won the first go-round with a time 6.7 seconds, and held on in the second-go to win the competition.

Madison Austin (Valley Farms, TX) won the breakaway roping event with rounds of 2.9 and 3.0.  Shambrae Williams (Mabank, TX) won the barrel racing with runs of 17.79 and 17.33, the latter being the fastest run of the rodeo.

Jake Snyder tied for second place in bareback riding.  The Pilot Point native won the second-go with an outstanding 74-point ride to climb into second place.

“We had a great rodeo,” said WC head coach Mike Brown. “Everyone did a great job and I’m excited for the student-athletes. We are peaking at the right time as we prepare for the Texas Tech Rodeo Oct. 23-25.”
