Five minutes and 16 Lady Coyotes' points into the game, the Lady Warriors finally broke the ice with a free throw. The Weatherford women, led by freshman Saule Kontoutaite's 22 points, fell just short of the century scoring mark in defeating the Bacone junior varsity squad, 98-43. "I don't know how much you get out of those kind of games," said WC head coach Bob Mckinley, "but I am pleased because we kept running the lanes. It's easy to just to kind of shut it down and not stay after it in a game like this. "We missed some easy shots but we were still playing hard. And in a game like that, it's about all you can hope for." The Lady Coyotes, up by 41 points already by halftime, had three other players in double figures besides Kontoutaite. Sophomore Monique Burnham finished with 13 points, while Lara Gilliam and Kayla Guidry contributed 12 points apiece. Ten WC women scored in the game. "It was good for us to have a game like that after taking off the four or five days for Thanksgiving," McKinley said. But I think we're progressing well for this time of year." The Lady Coyotes had a starter out in the game and will get to add another player after the Christmas break, so things are looking well for the team as they prepare for conference play. The men's team hit the floor running in the finale for the night, up by 23 at the half and increasing the lead to 30 points before two minutes had elapsed after the break. Despite, dressing only nine players, with a handful of players out due to injuries, the Coyotes' athleticism was too much for Bacone's JV team, as the Weatherford men put together a scoring show and defeated the Warriors, 102-69. "Our guys played hard the whole game," said Weatherford College head coach Dave Donnelly. "They played good team basketball, sharing the ball. I think we had 25 assists. Any time you have 20-something assists, you're playing good team basketball. They really played with a lot of energy and that carried over into the offense well." Freshman Kendall Durant did the most damage to the Bacone defense, scoring 31 points on the night for the Coyotes. Durant was effective on both ends of the floor, executing a nifty block against the glass late in the second half and providing a behind the glass scoop of a rebound that found the hoop. All nine of the Coyotes scored on the night, with four of those achieving double digits. WC's De'Angelo Robinson, Chancellor Lewis and Mike Behrens put in 16, 15 and 12 points, respectively. The men and women's team have one more game scheduled before the Christmas break, both home games. The Lady Coyotes are slated to meet OBU Friday at 6 p.m., while the Weatherford men match up with Coastal Bend, Saturday afternoon. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m.
