WC recovers, wins late over Navarro

WEATHERFORD – Not to be outdone by the Lady Coyotes late-inning heroics in their opener last week, the Weatherford College baseball team had plenty of drama in its opener, as well, as it launched a final-inning 3-run barrage to beat defending national champion Navarro College, 8-7.

Putting up five unanswered runs through the fifth frame, the Coyotes appeared to be in cruise mode until the top of the sixth, when Navarro fired a warning shot with a run in the sixth.

The Bulldogs did more than threaten in the top of the seventh and last inning, adding six runs to take a 7-5 lead, leaving the Coyotes with just three outs to make good on a comeback. WC did just that, rallying with three runs in the bottom half of the final frame for a walk-off victory. WC's Tyler Ervine spurred the win for the Coyotes, hitting for two extra-base hits.

Cameron Cox started on the mound for WC, pitching solid for five innings before giving way to relievers Ryan Talley, an Aledo grad, and Dustin Emmons. Josh Wagner closed out the Bulldogs to record the win.

Game 2 results were not available at press time. WC travels to Houston on Monday to face San Jacinto College in a doubleheader on Monday. The Coyotes return to Roger Williams Ballpark on Feb. 14 to take on Northeast Texas.
