Former Coyote joins British Basketball League

2015-16 Vlatko GranicFormer Weatherford College Coyote Vlatko Granic has signed a contract to play for the Manchester Giants of the British Basketball League (BBL).

The BBL is a 12-team league with representation from both England and Scotland.

Granic, a 6-foot-9-inch guard from Croatia, played for Mark Osina’s Coyotes for two years (2014-16), earning All-Conference honors both seasons. He then transferred to Loyola Chicago University, where he played one year for the Ramblers in the strong Missouri Valley Conference.

After a coaching change at Loyola, he began his professional career in Italy, playing for franchises in Barcellona Pozzo di Gotto and Molfetta. He was one of the top players in Italy, averaging 19 points and 13 rebounds per game.

“Vlatko brings something to the Giants that we haven’t seen for a while,” said Danny Byrne, Manchester head coach. “He’s a big guy, willing to mix it up in the paint, rebound and play hard on defense; but he can also stretch the floor and shoot the three. He brings that typical European style to our front court, and for such a young player he already has a wealth of experience in the US and Europe. From being in a top college program to leading a team in a European league, he’s ready for the rigors of the BBL.”

As a sophomore in Weatherford, Granic averaged a double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds and ranked 12th in the country for defensive rebounds.

Granic will arrive in Manchester next month and is likely to make his first appearance for the Giants in a pre-season game against the USA Select on
Sept. 2.
