Saturday afforded the Coyotes of Weatherford College an opportunity to sweep the Ranger College Rangers in the four-game series after the Coyotes won both games Wednesday afternoon in Ranger.
Ranger came into Roger Williams Ballpark just 1-9 in conference play and the Coyotes looked to improve their 6-4 conference record.
After completing the sweep with 6-2 and 7-2 victories, Weatherford Head Coach Jeff Lightfoot said, “We got three quality starts and the one that wasn’t a quality start we had a bullpen that pitched really well.”
In both games Saturday, Coyotes starters, sophomore Ryan Van Leeuwan and freshman Mitchell Walters pitched into the final inning of their respective games.
Van Leeuwan threw a complete game, giving up seven hits and two runs while striking out seven.
Walters made it 8 innings before he gave up a hit in the ninth and Tyler Perez came in to finish the game when he struck out two and got the final out on a ground ball to Purdue commit Nick Evarts at shortstop.
Offensively the Coyotes managed 13 runs on Saturday to bring their four-game total to 23.
Freshman Andrew Keefer had another big day in game two on Saturday as he managed to knock in the Coyotes first four runs, one on an RBI single in the first inning and the next three on a three run home run in the 5th.
Lightfoot said of the freshman, “Keefer’s been really consistent. He’s a positive presence in the middle of the lineup and helps us score a lot of runs.
He’s pretty much been the same guy every game. He has a good game plan and a really good, mature approach to hitting.”
He said of the entire team over the course of the week, “All series I really tried to hammer into the guys a style of play. Great tempo, great energy; and they really stayed consistent with that all week.”
The Coyotes head to Hill College to start the four game series on Wednesday and are back at home Saturday at 1:00.
