WC splits with Hill in conference openerBy Greg Webb, Weatherford Democrat Weatherford College opened its 2010 North Texas Junior College Athletics Conference campaign in explosive fashion Saturday, ripping Hill College pitching for nine runs in six innings. The Coyotes put up two runs in the opening inning and scored in four of the next five frames in the walk-off victory. Tucker Oakley added to the offensive fireworks with a home run in the first game of a double header with the Rebels, but the most prolific offensive producer for WC was outfielder Nick Lee, who went 3 for 4 at the plate, scoring twice and batting in another pair of runs. The freshman also hit a double and had a stolen base. Former Weatherford High School pitcher Josh Easley got the nod for the conference opener, making the best of the premier with a 2-hit, 10-strikeout performance. Easley gave up no earned runs in six innings as his season record improved to 4-0. WC's Taylor Christian provided relief in the seventh to close the deal. After taking an early lead in the second game, the Coyotes had to score in the bottom of the fifth to tie, countering Hill's 2-run foray in the top of the frame. After the next four innings remained scoreless, the top of the tenth saw Hill touch closer Zach Nuding for a pair of runs. WC failed to answer in the bottom frame, dropping the nightcap, 5-3. The Coyotes will try to improve on their 1-1 conference record Wednesday when they travel to Gainesville to meet North Central Texas College. The 7/9-inning double header begins at noon. WC returns home Saturday, facing McClennan at 1 p.m. Hill College vs. Weatherford College (Game 1 on 3/6/10)
